Wireless Future – Newly Launched Chroma Electric Vehicle Wireless Power Transfer ATS

As the future of power electronics continues to grow, electric vehicle (EV) technology advances as well redefining the meaning of EV convenience and safety with the new feature: “wireless charging.” Wireless charging brings significant changes to the EV industry by removing the need for charge connectors completely thus preventing connector wear-out and electric shock hazards. Through successful testing and measurements of key EV components, Chroma ATE, a world leading electronics testing company, launched its first EV Wireless Power Transfer ATS.

In May 2016, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) announced a wireless charging standard, the SAE J2954, set up by several internationally renowned car manufacturers and tier 1 suppliers. China held extensive and rigorous tests on EV wireless charging products in order to further research the new technology and lay the foundation for GB/T standards; over 20 domestic companies participated in the testing. Chroma had developed complete AC sources, DC load product lines, and automated test systems encompassing the new standards need for a minimal power requirement of 3.7KW~22KW. This allowed for new levels of power effective tests on input, stability accuracy measurements on output, and limit voltage and current protections for wireless charging. In addition, the new development successfully conducted offset angles simulation and efficient measurement of X, Y, Z, Ψ, Ɵ, Φ six axes when used with the EV Wireless Power Transfer ATS and in conjunction with the new standards as well.

Chroma’s EV Wireless Power Transfer ATS has been adopted by the China Automotive Technology & Research Center (CATARC), China Electric Power Research Institute, and Experiment & Verification Center of State Grid Electric Power Research Institute (NARI) laboratories, as well as several international car factories. High Voltage Grid Simulator Adds PV Inverter’s HVRT Test Function

As photovoltaic industry policies continue its growing support for distributed solar power systems, commercial power generation equipment demands for 20kVA-100kVA inverters increase as well. With the development of grid-connected high-voltage 600Vac-800Vac (VLL) systems to reduce cost and increase power generation efficiency, an important challenge to manufacturers is the inverter’s stability in high-voltage grid connections. The newest high-voltage 1385Vac (VLL)/120kVA regenerative grid simulator released by Chroma meets the specifications for inverter quality verification and grid performance tests, such as LVRT, HVRT, harmonics, waveform distortion, 3-phase unbalance, voltage dips, short interruptions, and voltage change immunity tests.

The latest UL1741 SA specification for inverter design must be able to run under HVRT test without off-line operation. In addition, it must have the capability to continuously adjust the power and infuse reactive current into the power system during high voltage ride through. So, when the inverter is designed for a normal rated voltage of 690Vac (VLL), it must be tested for rated grid voltage (over 897VLL) which is raised 1.3, 1.2, or 1.1 times respectively as it has to run uninterruptedly at dozens of test points during voltage rise and recovery. Moreover, it has to respond normally and issue a proportioned capacitive reactive current according to the standard during HVRT, which can effectively stabilized the grid voltage and ensure the demand for the quality of electricity.

Chroma’s high-voltage power grid simulator can output voltage up to 1385VLL (800VLN) without using a step up transformer. Besides up to 1.5V/us output voltage transient capability, it has flexible, cost-effective and space-saving features. For example, when testing an inverter below 50kVA, it can be used as two 60kVA power grid simulators; and if high power and high voltage 60-100kVA inverters are required for testing, two 60kVA power grid simulators can be connected in series for up to 1385VLL (800VLN).

Chroma Collaborates with the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology to Help Improve Al and Green Industry Technologies

On March 26th, 2018, Chroma ATE Inc. collaborated with the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) to hold a signing ceremony in efforts to engage the electronics industry to actively participate in an international industrial-academic alliance. The organizations seek to advance the research and development of innovated technologies associated with sustainable energy, AI artificial intelligence, smart manufacturing, etc.

Since 2015, Chroma has invested over 15 million NT dollars along with other various instrumental equipment (valued at 4.2 million NT dollars) to the Chroma NTUST R&D Center in efforts to help cultivate the academic aptitudes of NTUST students.

The AERO Team at Beihang University: The Movement Towards the Unmanned Electric Vehicle

During the 8th anniversary of the Formula Student China (FSC) organization, Beihang University’s AERO team celebrated a decisive victory using their premiered retrofitted electric car at the first annual Formula Student Autonomous China (FSAC) competition. In recent years, the direction of electric vehicles has been trending towards a new technological state of autonomy, or “self-driving.” Beihang University is one of the few top universities in the FSAC to participate in, not only both traditional fossil-fuel and electric vehicle competitions, but now also the “unmanned” vehicle movement. Thus, the team required a higher level of technology to back up its demands; the hardware and software needed to be functionally integrated with high complexity to ensure stable operation of electronic product. Chroma Electronics provided the university’s AERO team with professional testing equipment and experiences to assist in achieving its electronic vehicle development plans and to improve the overall unmanned vehicle campaign.

Frank Chang, the principal of NCTU, Tainan acting mayor Li Meng Yung, Chroma CEO Leo Huang, Acer Group founder Stan Shih, Himax Technologies founder Biing-Seng Wu, Catcher Technology CEO Allen Hong, Wistron CEO Simon Lin, and Hermes-Epitek GM Hsu Chin-jung unveiled the monument to the completed building for the official opening. The dormitories were built through the collaboration of industry-academic with construction fees donated by alumni and enterprises. Besides providing students with comfortable accommodation space, the National Chiao Tung University will allocate a certain percentage of student accommodation fees annually to the research cooperation fund in support of the industry-academic collaboration.

The Newest Electrical Mains and Power Line Interference Simulation Testing Software for Download

In recent years, renewable energy has received lots of attention in particular the huge growth of solar energy and wind power. More and more power systems incorporating into the grid could have a significant impact on the current power system. Thus, many standards were set up for integrating renewable energy into the grid such as UL 1741, IEEE 1547, IEEE 1547.1, and NBT 32004, etc.

Moreover, the Low Voltage Ride-Through (LVRT) feature put forward by various countries stipulates that the grid-connected device such as a solar inverter or wind power generator will continue to supply power, when the grid voltage falls, for a period of time until the grid power returns to normal.

To address these requirements, Chroma has released testing software that can simulate the abnormality/distortion of the electrical mains and power line interference. This graphical human-machine interface software controls Chroma’s regenerative grid simulator, the 61800 Series, which is equipped with four quadrant capabilities to satisfy test demands.

In the example below, the power dropped to 0V for 150ms and resumed 70% of output for 550ms, and then spent 800ms to rise from 70% to 90% output capacity. All these conditions can be easily simulated using the software LIST mode. In addition, a preview of the waveform can be seen on the software.

Chroma’s AC Source Software has functions for , LIST mode, STEP mode, PULSE mode, and User-Defined Waveforms (to simulate distorted or interfered mains power). Also, the inter-harmonic test function can simulate the abnormality of the main electrical power.

Chroma Test Equipment Designated by IFEC 2017 for Power Supply Competition

The IFEC, initiated by IEEE, is an international student competition for innovation, conservation, and effective use of electrical energy, which is open to college and university student teams from recognized engineering programs in any location.

Chroma, the world’s leading manufacturer of test instrumentation, has been the only official designated equipment sponsor for three consecutive years and recently participated in the competition held at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in the United States. A Chroma 8000 Automated Test System (ATS) was customized to perform the test items for the competition where students were to create high efficiency, high density isolated DC-DC converters. The data measured by the Chroma 8000 ATS was used as the evaluation criteria and the test items are summarized as below:

To cope with the competition requirements for high accuracy and high current slew, the 8000 ATS was equipped Chroma’s 63600 Series high precision electronic load with a sampling rate of up to 500k Hz and a 2A/µs current slew rate. Combined with the open software architecture of the Chroma 8000 ATS, a complete test report was generated to give the judges an important reference to rate the competition entries.

Chroma ATE Invested Innovative Nanotech Inc. with Technology Transfer from ITRI to Advancing in Semiconductor Front-end Process Inspection

TAOYUAN, Taiwan, Nov. 24, 2017 — Innovative Nanotech Inc., invested by Chroma ATE Inc., signed a contract with Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) on Nov. 24 for “Nanoparticles Monitoring Technology” transfer. In addition, ITRI will serve as an important shareholder of Innovative Nanotech. Just a short time ago Innovative Nanotech had been contracted with Hsinchu Science Park for the purpose of developing and creating liquid nanoparticle monitoring systems used in the semiconductor manufacturing process to help improve the yield rate.

Large amount of liquid solutions are often used to clean, grind and etch the wafer surface during the semiconductor manufacturing process and impurities in the solution have an impact on the defect rate. Light scattering particle measurement technology currently cannot precisely detect the size and quantity of solution particles under 20nm, which makes it difficult in controlling the manufacturing process. Also, with development from 20nm to 10nm and even to 7nm, the minimized transistors make the width of current path narrow; therefore, when impurities like nanoparticles appear in solution, it will affect the defect-free rate of the product.

Innovative Nanotech will introduce to semiconductor manufacturers a new generation nanoparticle monitoring system, SuperSizer, which will accurately detect the size and quantity of particles above 5nm. This will allow manufacturers to take necessary measures to improve the process according to the monitored results. In addition to the semiconductor manufacturing process, this technology can also be applied to electronics, optoelectronics, and biomedical materials fields.

Chroma will exhibit Multiple Optical Test Solutions in OPTO Taiwan – Booth: J1016

Lately the laser diode has been used widely in human face recognition, autonomous driving, and optical communications. The quality and reliability of laser diodes are getting more important as the demand increases. The Chroma 58604 Laser Diode Burn-in and Reliability Test System provides bi-directional SMU function allowing users to switch the mode when performing long-term reliability test in the optical devices. The Chroma 58620 Laser Diode Characterization System is all-in-one design integrating optics, electrics and temperature control into the system for users to specify the test conditions as desired. Moreover, Chroma also developed laser diode VCSEL testing equipment for 3D sensing applications using its unique and innovative technology.

Aiming to the ultra-high resolution video broadcast technology that will be put in service in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, Chroma has launched an 8K SHV (Super-Hi Vision) test solution to fulfill the testing requirement for 8K (7680×4320 / 8192 x 4320) ultra-high definition from panel and display industries. This solution adopts modular design with different signals or power modules to meet the diversified test requirements. It has high flexibility, wide scalability, and supports a variety of mainstream industry communication interfaces. The Chroma 2918 supports full 8K@60/120Hz resolution, with the unique FPD Master, GO/NO GO software for fast editing and testing process. The Chroma 2238, supporting resolutions up to 8K@60Hz, has an intuitive and user-friendly graphical touch panel and software UI, providing users a smoother operation experience. Furthermore, it also carries a separate graphics engine that can output a maximum of four different resolutions and test patterns at the same time.

The Chroma 7200 Series solar cell and wafer automatic test solution is designed to inspect the wafer and cell defects on the solar cell production line. With Chroma’s smart factory solution, it can meet customer’s demand for low-cost production. The Chroma 7200 test solution can inspect solar cells or wafers for 6″ size, and detect single crystal, polycrystalline or even single-crystal products. According to the production process requirement, this system can integrate 8 kinds of AOI machines with different functions to perform wafer feed inspection, anti-reflective film color test, silk screen printing inspection and cell shipping classification inspection, etc.
